Day 9. Mapping clusters to pages and avoiding cannibalization

Concept1/7

The key idea

A keyword map

Create a table in which each cluster has one preferred target page. Columns: cluster, main query, URL, page type and status.

Useful statuses are: good as it is, needs improvement, and needs creation. Research becomes a work plan.

Cannibalization

Cannibalization is overlap between your pages that makes them compete for the same task. Possible signs include multiple URLs alternating for a query or repeatedly unstable performance. Multiple pages receiving impressions is not, on its own, proof of a problem.

Investigate:

  • Search Console queries associated with several similar URLs.
  • Rankings that alternate between those URLs.
  • Similar pages found through site:yourdomain.example query.

Options

  1. Merge: combine overlapping weak pages into one stronger page, redirecting genuinely replaced URLs.
  2. Differentiate intent: make one a buying page and another a guide.
  3. Clarify the preferred page: use internal links. Canonical tags are for duplicate or substantially similar content, not a general solution for distinct pages; see day 17.
Diagram2/7

A cluster-based site map

A site tree with catalog, guides and selections beneath the homepage, each containing pages assigned to query clusters.
Let search needs inform the structure: each page has a clear task.
Example3/7

Investigating cannibalization in Search Console

An illustrative store query: ‘how to choose a coffee grinder’.

Before

Three overlapping pages receive scattered impressions at low positions, suggesting a need to review their roles.

After

The two articles are merged and an old URL redirected. The category keeps a distinct buying intent. The figures illustrate a possible result, not a forecast.

How an expert reasons

The informational task belongs to the guide. Merge the useful material and redirect replaced articles. Keep the category, but clarify its transactional role.

Key point4/7

Plan redirects when merging pages

Deleting a page can break links, bookmarks and visitor journeys. If you replace it with a genuinely equivalent consolidated page, use a permanent redirect to that destination.

Check5/7

Check your understanding

What is keyword cannibalization?

Check6/7

Check your understanding

Two weak articles cover the same grinder-selection task. What is the best option?

Practice7/7

Build your map

  1. Add a Map sheet: cluster, main query, URL, page type and status.
  2. Assign an existing page to each cluster or mark it for creation.
  3. Check three main queries with site:yourdomain.example main query and review any overlapping pages.

Note how many pages are ready, need improvement or need creation, plus any suspected cannibalization.

Saved automatically, even offline.
