Day 3. Anatomy of search results: competing for attention
The key idea
More than ten blue links
A search engine results page (SERP) contains several types of elements, each competing for attention and clicks:
- Ads: marked as sponsored placements. Paying for ads does not buy better organic rankings.
- Featured snippets: extracts that answer a question directly, often drawn from a clear paragraph, list or table.
- AI answers: generated summaries with source links. Day 29 covers making content useful and discoverable for these systems.
- People Also Ask: expandable questions that can suggest useful subheadings.
- Local results: maps and business listings for location-related queries.
- Videos, images and products: specialized result formats.
- Organic listings: titles, URLs and descriptions.
Practical implications
- The first organic result can sit below the first screen. Check what appears above it as well as its ranking.
- Different formats create different opportunities: snippets, video results and maps.
- Your listing acts like an advertisement. Its click-through rate (CTR) depends on the title, description and any eligible rich-result features. Those features are not guaranteed.
What makes up a results page
A search listing worth opening
The same article with different titles and descriptions in the results.
Before
The title says nothing about the content. The description is a random menu extract. Neither promises an answer.
After
The title names the task and offers five criteria; the description explains the benefit. The listing stands out through specificity.
How an expert reasons
Write the title around the actual query and add useful specifics: a number, format or relevant year. The description answers ‘What will I get if I click?’ Day 11 goes deeper.
Results vary between people
Location, device, language and personalization can change results. For a more consistent check, use a private browsing window and specify the location; this still does not remove all variation. Rank trackers can apply consistent settings.

Analyze the results for your query
Open the results for your most important query in a private browsing window.
- List the elements from top to bottom: ads, snippets, AI answers, questions, maps, videos and organic listings.
- How far down do organic listings begin?
- Record three People Also Ask questions.
- Which organic listing would you most want to click, and why?
Save your observations. The questions will be useful on days 12 and 13.
